Vienna. Today the Corona traffic light is scheduled to start its trial operation. The criteria and measures, how the lights would be implemented are still disputed between experts from the Ministry of Health and the federal states.
Today, however, the Corona Commission must decide when the traffic light will be switched to yellow. In addition to new infection rates, Health Minister Rudolf Anschober wants to include the number of tests, contact tracing and the number of intensive care beds in the criteria.
However, individual countries complain that there is no nationwide uniform testing strategy and therefore the test numbers cannot be compared. Some districts have no hospitals or none at all, while others admit patients from other districts. On the whole, however, the criteria will probably be agreed on today.
What happens when the traffic light turns green, yellow, orange or red
According to Health Minister Anschober, Vienna and Linz, for example, should be switched to yellow immediately. In some traffic lights, however, these cities would already be orange. According to the Austrian Corona traffic light, the city of Wels with almost 90 new infections per 100,000 in the past seven days would be deep red and would have to be locked down. When the traffic light turns to orange there is a limited visits in hospitals and nursing homes. Furthermore, masks must be worn in closed rooms.
If the traffic light turns red, all schools will close.
Traffic Light in schools
In order to properly react on an increase in COVID-19 cases Education Minister Faßmann presented a four step “traffic light system”.
Green: normal classroom teaching. Nevertheless, the school should be aware of the risk of Corona infections.
Yellow: mouth-and-nose protection should be worn outside from the classroom. However, it can be taken off when seated. Singing should be done either outdoor or with a mouth-and-nose protection. Sport classes is recommended to be held outside.
Orange: No school activities anymore. Singing is only allowed outdoor. Teacher meetings have to be done online. Secondary Schools II (High Schools) are recommended to provide distance learning.
Red: Distance learning in all schools if a general lockdown is announced. If needed, an emergency service is provided.
